Elizabeth George Speare was one of the few authors who have been awarded the Newbery Medal twice for her books. The Witch of Blackbird Pond received the Newbery Medal in 1959. Her other books include The Sign of the Beaver, which was a Newbery Honor Book, and The Bronze Bow, the 1961 Newbery Medal winner. Her books are recognized and honourably mentioned as historical fiction.
Speare was born on November 21st, 1908, in Melrose, Massachusetts. She described her childhood as "exceptionally happy". She discovered her gift for writing at the age of eight, and completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at Smith College in 1930, and also her Master's degree in English from Boston University. She became an English teacher at many private schools, and started writing again when her children were in high school.
Her first book titled "Calico Captive" was published in 1957. The Witch of Blackbird Pond was her second novel. Elizabeth George Speare died of an aortic aneurysm on November 15, 1994. She was 85 years old.
The story of The Witch of Blackbird Pond takes place in Wethersfield, Conneticut, in 1687, after the English Civil War. The townspeople are descendents of Puritans who first came from England in 1620. Families are given a piece of land, and have access to pasture fields, which they use to harvest crops for profit and food. Religion was a very important aspect in their life, and sitting through hours of sermons were considered as serious matters.
